Temptations

Power was our weakness and our temptation is a dangerous chemistry.
Temptation is the feeling we get when encountered by an opportunity to do what we innately know we shouldn't.
A silly idea is current that good people do not know what temptation means. This is an obvious lie. Only those who try to resist temptation know how strong it is. A man who gives in to temptation after a few minutes simply does not know what it would have been like an hour later. That is why bad people, in one sense, know very little about badness. They have lived a sheltered life by always giving in. Hard to say what's right when all we want to do is wrong.
Temptations are enticingly irresistible, we generally avoid temptation unless we can't resist it. Between two evils, we must pick the one we never tried before. No evil dooms us hopelessly except the evil we love, and desire to continue in, and make no effort to escape from, the devil doesn't come dressed in a red cape and pointy horns. He comes as everything you've ever wished for.
Laws and principles are not for the times when there is no temptation,  they are for such moments as this, when body and soul rise in mutiny against their rigour.
Self-knowledge is better than self-control any day. The greatest temptations are not those that solicit our consent to obvious sin, but those that offer us great evils masking as the greatest goods.
The only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it.
